Gemini's Implicit Caching & OpenAI's Nonprofit Decision

Read time – 5 minutes

Hey there, hope your week went well! This is Charles again. As always, I've been reading, testing tools, and trying to understand where things are heading - not just in tech, but in how we work and create. The web moves fast, but we don't have to chase every trend. Instead, we can pick a few things to explore each week, together.

🛠 Tool I Used This Week

This week, I explored Reor Project. The idea is pretty simple: a local-first notebook that connects to a small LLM assistant to help with your writing - without sending your data to the cloud. Obviously, that means you'll still need to set up local storage and be okay with some early-stage rough edges.

I love the vision behind it. It's minimal, quiet, and privacy-conscious. While the project isn't super active at the moment, it's definitely a fun experiment to tinker with - especially if you like hacking on your own workflows. Just don't rely on it too much yet.

🧠 This Week's Big Shift

Google

Gemini dropped something big this week: implicit caching. And it happened right on my birthday - maybe that's why it stuck in my head.

What does it mean? Faster and cheaper access to Google's newest AI models. That's great news for indie hackers and small builders. More accessible infra = more ideas come life.

OpenAI

Meanwhile at OpenAI: They've officially decided to stay nonprofit. In a world obsessed with valuation and exits, that's rare. It made me wonder, maybe long-term mission really can win over short-term growth.

Sam Altman also sent out a memo confirming that they'll stick with their nonprofit structure at least for now. As someone trying to build sustainable, transparent products, this struck a chord.

It reminded me: you don't have to chase venture capital or hypergrowth to do something meaningful. The real flex? Build something people care about, with values you don't compromise.
